The AW17 UGG Collective – This is UGG

UGG has its roots in California. Founded on the Southern California coast by an Australian surfer in 1978, the brand’s history is as rich and unique as the Golden State’s topography and people, which is why we are telling our story through them. Meet the UGG Collective, a group of creatives who embody our values and the spirit of our home state. This season includes an actor, artist, surfer, snowboarder, a group of musicians, and a photographer and his muse.

Sonic Youth co-founder and visual artist Kim Gordon grew up in Los Angeles, where she also attended Otis College of Art and Design. After graduating, she moved to New York City, becoming the bassist, guitarist, and vocalist of Sonic Youth but has since returned to her hometown. She’s become an idol not just for the pivotal role she and the band played in the alternative rock scene but also as a feminist, owning the label long before it was cool. An eternal rebel who seems persistently self-assured, Kim embodies contradiction, making her one of the most interesting and powerful cultural figures today.

Kyle MacLachlan has become a familiar face in Hollywood through roles on Sex and the City, How I Met Your Mother, and Portlandia, but he’s something of an icon for his portrayal of Special Agent Dale Cooper in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Dedicated to his craft, the actor exhibits an uncanny mastery of the nuanced area between congeniality and menace. Also an avid wine lover, MacLachlan is a founding partner of the Pursued by Bear label, based in his native Washington.

Zackery Michael is a self-taught fashion photographer based out of Brooklyn, New York, but he spends most of his time on the road with his free-spirited model girlfriend and muse, Lola McDonnell.

Daniel Hivner grew up on skateboards, surfboards, and snowboards. When he’s not at home in LA or traveling the world for work, he treks between Big Bear and Mammoth with his guitar in tow.

Uzumaki Cepeda is a Dominican American visual artist who lives in Los Angeles. Having grown up in the Bronx, she often works with bright colors reminiscent of the bodegas and acrylic manicures exploring themes of childhood innocence. Although she works in many mediums, including photography, she is renowned for her faux fur installations, one of which was featured at the first-ever ComplexCon in 2016.

The Garden is a conceptual band that consists of twin brothers Wyatt and Fletcher Shears, who can count Hedi Slimane as one of their biggest fans. These Orange County natives have coined their own genre “Vada Vada,” which values creative expression above convention and borrows from punk, hip hop, new wave, and goth to name a few.

Hanalei Reponty, or the “mermaid from the island of Tahiti,” has spent most of her life traveling the world as a professional surfer, but she now calls San Clemente home. In addition to surfing and modeling, she founded and runs Abysse, a line of ethically made, sustainable swimwear and activewear.
