“We believe in good business – the kind that helps our community, our environment, and inspires others.”
a.) Climate and Clean EnergyWe strive to reduce our energy consumption and integrate climate change measures into our policies and planning. We measure energy consumption at our corporate HQ, our Moreno Valley distribution center, and most of our retail stores in the United States. We also monitor our key supply chain partners’ energy usage globally and set reduction targets for them, because the most significant emissions result from the production level.
b.) Carbon and Greenhouse Gas EmissionsOutside of the fossil-fuel industry, the fashion industry is the largest contributor to carbon emissions. Energy usage in manufacturing has an enormous impact on our environmental footprint. Transitioning most of our production from China to Vietnam was a huge step forward. China relies heavily on coal, whereas Vietnam emphasizes hydroelectric energy, which reduces our overall footprint significantly. As we embark on a lifecycle assessment of our product materials, we hope to determine where our carbon and greenhouse gas emissions are most prevalent so we can make further improvements. We also recognize the opportunity to reduce other significant air emissions. Our Restricted Substances Policy sets forth expectations of our supply chain partners when using substances that are known to have an environmental impact. We regularly review our restricted substances policy to ensure we are up-to-date with all legal restrictions, and provide ongoing training and monitoring of our partners to ensure compliance with our stringent requirements.
c.) WaterWe understand that water is a sparse commodity, and we need to do what we can to conserve it. In line with our sustainable development goals, we seek to reduce our overall water consumption. We only want to work with partners who take environmental impact mitigation as seriously as we do, and continue pushing our partners do to better. At our corporate headquarters, we conserve water through low-flow fixtures that save approximately 350,000 gallons of water each year. We also plant drought-tolerant native plants, which require less water, and utilize a culvert system that returns rainfall to a wetland restoration area. We know our largest footprint comes at the production level, which is why we also monitor our supply chain partners’ environmental footprint, including water usage.
d.) WasteWe strive to significantly reduce waste generation at our own headquarters, our distribution center locations, and our key factory partners. Our Moreno Valley Distribution Center is nearly a zero-waste facility. By taking advantage of 3D printing and design, we can reduce or altogether eliminate samples, thus creating less waste. The ability to design and print on-site allows us to visualize design intent before we finalize a sample, ultimately reducing the number of samples made, errors made, and shipping needed. We also measure waste output among key supply chain partners.
