UGG believes prom is an experience everyone should get to enjoy. For our fifth year, UGG and Pacific Pride Foundation have reimagined the age-old tradition with PROUD Prom – an inclusive event with local LGBTQIA+ and allied youth from Santa Barbara and the coastal communities of California. A celebration of identity and love, this year’s virtual prom included friends of the brand like Lil Nas X.
Lil Nas X is a two-time Grammy Award-winning artist from Atlanta who rose to prominence with the release of his record-breaking single “Old Town Road,” followed by his 5x Platinum single “Panini” and 2x Platinum song “Rodeo.” He has been named one of Time’s 25 Most Influential People on the Internet, Billboard’s 21 Under 21, and Forbes’ 30 Under 30.
To extend the story of our campaign, we interviewed him on a range of subjects from identity to style.
ON PROUD PROM:
Celebrations like PROUD Prom are so important. I feel as though the community does need those safe spaces. A lot of times, people feel left out or feel very anxious about everything, because all eyes are on them for whatever reason.
I’m still getting in touch with the community because I strayed away for so long from being involved in any way. I wasn’t super comfortable in the community because my sexuality was something I never planned to tell anyone.
Finding pride in my identity took a lot from people that came before me being brave enough to be themselves and opening that door for me.
ON COMING OUT:
When I came out, there was the usual stomach feeling x100. I wasn’t scared because I felt like something good was going to happen, but I also knew I was going to lose a lot of people too – but you know, there’s always going to be room for more once you kick the wrong people out.
To my surprise, a lot of people did tell me I was one of the reasons they came out. I guess I didn’t believe that would happen, but it was super dope to hear.
Oh, this kid is going to try anything and everything, and he’s more than likely going to look really great in it.
I think this collection from UGG is very vibrant and beautiful overall. I’m a person who loves bright colors, and this is right up my alley.
